DORSET households could save a combined £11m if they switched appliances off.
In the countdown to Big Energy Saving Week – a joint campaign between Energy Saving Trust, Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) and Citizens Advice – new research reveals the number of appliances in homes is sending bills out of control and costing households billions of pounds.
A study found that despite 74 percent being worried about increasing bills, only half check to see if unused appliances are switched off.
And 40 percent of people who own gaming consoles leave them ‘on’ or in standby when not in use.
One in five people use a fridge or freezer that is at least 15 years old.
These products are more likely to be inefficient and consume more energy than necessary.
From Monday, October 20, the campaign will help householders to take control of their electricity and heating bills with free advice throughout the week over the phone, online and at events.
