DORSET County Council has won a national award for its work promoting arts and cultural events across the county.

The Association of Independent Festivals (AIF) recognised the arts department at the council as winner of the Forward Culture and Tourism Award: Forward Thinking Local Authority.

Representatives from a wide range of organisations gathered at the award ceremony in Cardiff last week to celebrate the diverse and creative community of festivals across the country.

Pat Pryor, culture and community planning manager at Dorset County Council said: “We are delighted to receive the award for AIF, who recognise that Dorset’s culture assets, the ancient landscape, our heritage market towns, our festivals and events enhance visitors’ experience and give them a reason to extend their stay.

“We have a growing reputation for festivals such as the Dorset Art Weeks open studios event, and the stunning outdoor performance of the Inside Out Dorset Festival, and B-Side with its digital and contemporary programme.

“We are all keen to continue our work with the Association of Independent Festivals to put the visitor at the heart of our cultural offer.”

Claire O’Neil, senior manager at AIF said: “It’s been a moving experience to witness organisers of some of the best festivals around highlighting what they love about other festivals, the most impressive things they’ve seen, their favourite moments, and the people that they hold in high esteem for giving an incredible contribution in one way or another.

“These awards are a reflection of the respect and appreciation felt amongst the festival community.”
