CROWDS flocked to Weymouth Beach for a weekend of motorsport racing.

The roar of engines and the smell of petrol filled the air along the seafront this weekend, as quad bikes raced around a 1.4km track for the second Dickies Weymouth Beach X.

Spectators lined the Esplanade to catch a glimpse of the action, despite rainy conditions on Sunday.

The racing extravaganza returned to the town this weekend after the event was cancelled in February due to the winter storms.

Adults and youth riders from across the UK and Europe raced around the course on bikes ranging between 50cc and 700cc.

Quad bike race organiser O.R.E Events' technical assistant, John 'Smokey' Newbury said: “It's been a great weekend - the racing has been fast and furious.

“We have had the weather with us and it was a fantastic day, great races and no injuries plus we had loads of spectators on Saturday which was really good.

“Yesterday (sun) the weather was not as good but there were still a lot of spectators on the promenade. I think it's a good spectacle for Weymouth which can be quite quiet at this time of the year.”

The event is supported by Weymouth and Portland Borough Council and the Riviera Hotel and is in support of Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance Ross and Hannah Davey travelled from St Giles on Heath in Devon to watch the races with their family.

Hannah, 10, said: “I've really enjoyed the weekend, my favourite part has been watching the quad bike races because I race on them as well.”

Ross, 38, said: “We came down last year and hopefully I will be taking part in a race next year. I think it's a brilliant event because Weymouth is a great place to come and watch the races and at the end of the day it's all for charity.”
