On Thursday 8th February there will be a meeting of the Full Council to approve the Pavilion and Ferry Terminal draft master plan.

This is our chance to show the whole Council just how much public opposition there is to these plans. Unbelievably, there are still some Councillors who are insisting that the majority of residents are in favour of the plans.

Residents are very, very angry about the way in which their opinions have been ignored, as was amply demonstrated by the 'Storming of the Guildhall' at the Environment and Conservation Committee meeting on Monday 29th January. Council Officers were well aware that large numbers of people would not be able to get in, but in their arrogance refused to change the venue. It is very regrettable that they saw fit to treat the residents with such contempt, and were prepared to subject the Councillors to such public anger.

Residents have little confidence in the Council. This view can only have been reinforced by the total shambles of the reconvened Environment & Conservation meeting last Thursday. The meeting was a complete fiasco with a Chairman who appeared to have little understanding of the procedures. Is it any wonder that residents do not have any confidence in the Council's ability to run the Borough?

Some Councillors have actually asked residents to come up with alternative schemes and methods of financing them. It is quite incredulous that the current scheme has inspired so little confidence in Councillors that they have resorted to this. Councillors have been briefed by their Officers that there is no other alternative than to go ahead with the plan from the current developer. Exactly why is it that Officers are so set on imposing this scheme on Councillors?

Councillors do not have to be bulldozed by their Officers into accepting these plans. There are other alternatives which can be investigated. We need plans which are in keeping with the existing area, which provide improved leisure facilities, and are for a complex which we can all be proud of, not for a grossly over-developed estate of luxury apartments with marina berths.

I appeal to everyone who came to the last meetings, and to everyone else possible, to come to this meeting on Thursday at the Pavilion at 7pm, so that we can show the Council once again the unwavering determination of residents to oppose these plans.
