SUMMER may seem like a long time away from the dreary days of January – but it hasn’t stopped organisers announcing details of a June music festival.

Chesil Rocks, supporting Samaritans of Dorset, returns on Saturday, June 20 and is set to be another sell-out.

It is organised by the Warren family who open up their home at Higher Farmhouse, Langton Herring, for a family day of music and entertainment.

Showcasing a variety of music performing on three stages, the 500-capacity event is in its fourth year and has sold out for the last two.

It has supported the local branch of the Samaritans from the outset – a cause the Warrens describe as ‘crucial’ – and last year more than £9,000 was handed over.

The idea for the festival came after a garden party the Warrens held when it was suggested their home, which overlooks Chesil Beach, would make a good venue for an outdoor music event. The Warrens also wanted to organise an event for the Samaritans.

“We never thought it would grow like this,” said joint organiser Tim Warren.

“We’ve sold out the last two years and had to turn people away on the day so we’re advising people to book early.”

He added: “I remember driving home one particularly evening and seeing someone who I know volunteers as a Samaritan driving off for a night shift.

“I thought if we could have a nice community event and raise funds for this great charity then it’s got to be worth it.”

Mr Warren said the popularity of Chesil Rocks was down to its family appeal and wide range of music including classical, folk, rock and ska.

Acts this year include Imperial Leisure, Coppertongue, Jolly Boys Outing, and the Steve Wilson Band.

It is also hoped to bring some poetry and drama to this year’s event. Children’s activities include face painting, storytelling, a treasure hunt and fossil painting courtesy of Fossil Fun for Kids.

Food will be available including pizzas, gourmet burgers and veggie options. Reasonably priced drinks include Pimms, local ales and ciders and soft drinks. Those attending are asked not to bring alcohol and will be subject to a search on entry.

Chesil Rocks runs from noon-midnight on June 20. Tickets available via chesilrocks.com or from Poundbury Dental Practice, Kings Arms at Portesham, Lugger Inn at Chickerell or The Elm Tree at Langton Herring.
