New recruits needed for Army Cadet challenge DORCHESTER'S Army Cadets are trying to drum up some new recruits.

The detachment currently has places for young people who want to sample the variety and challenge of service life.

Detachment Commander Tony Price said: "We emulate the Army - they are our sponsors - and we are a disciplined organisation.

"But this is tailored to young people and they enjoy it."

The detachment, which caters for boys and girls aged 13 to 18, is a major player for the Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme.

Lt Price said: "We've had a few staff changes here and numbers have dipped a bit. But it's settled now with me as detachment commander and Craig Joynes as sergeant instructor. We're in a position to build up numbers."

One more change is imminent - a change of cap badge to mark the merger of the Devon and Dorset Regiment with other regiments to form The Rifles.

Cadets are given their uniform though they have to supply their own boots. But costs for activities are kept to a minimum.

Lt Price added: "Youngsters from all backgrounds get involved and enjoy it. It's very rewarding for everyone. It gives young people the chance to try new things and get an idea of what service life would be like."
