PORTESHAM couple Aimee and Ron Burt celebrated their Diamond wedding anniversary with family and friends.

Mrs Burt, 82, said she grew up in Bradford Abbas near Sher-borne and met her husband, 83, soon after he moved to the area at a square dancing class in 1952.

She said they later made arrangements to marry on the birthday of her father-in-law, making their special day a double celebration for the family.

“We got married at St Mary’s Church, in Bradford Abbas, in 1955 and had about 60 guests,” Mrs Burt said.

“My mother-in-law made me a lovely white dress, and the bridesmaids’ dresses, because she was a pro-fessional dressmaker.

“It was a bitterly cold day and it rained beforehand.

“Ron had to work on the day.

“I was late so I made him a bit nervous, but that’s the bride’s privilege,” she joked.

Mr and Mrs Burt moved to Portesham 10 years ago after Ron retired from his work as a dairy farmer.

They have two children, Angela and Michael.

They also have three grand-sons, Kevin, Anthony and William; and a two-year-old great grandson, Nathan.

Asked for her secret to long marriage, Mrs Burt said: “You have got to work at it.

“I won’t say we haven’t had our differences but you have to stick together.”
