THE A354 has reopened following a collision which saw a lorry jack-knife and hit a car.

 

The accident happened just after 8.40am and it is believed a vehicle towing a trailer and a car are involved in the collision on the A354 close to the Bincombe slipway.

Dorset Police and Dorset Fire and Rescue Service and the ambulance service attended the scene.

Officers said they had a report of a jack-knifed lorry and then a report of a three vehicle car crash.

Police officers said it is believed the lorry and trailer jack-knifed and hit one vehicle which in turn, hit another and another.

The vehicles involved are: a white Mercedes drop-sided lorry registered to a business in Nottingham, a blue Renault Megane, registered to a man in Whitney and a green and black Mercedes coupe registered to a Weymouth address, there are no details yet for the fourth vehicle involved.

The road was closed at the Bincombe turning and the Jurassic Roundabout.

Diversions were put in place around the incident and traffic was directed up through Upwey and Broadwey and down via Bincombe.

Drivers were advised to use the A353 via Osmington and A352 via Broadmayne.

The road re-opened at around 12.40pm.

A spokesman for the ambulance service said they were called at 8.37am and had left the scene by 9.15am. He said: "We were called to a report of an collision involving a lorry and a car. There were two casualties, both of them were in the car.

"They were taken to Dorset County Hospital to be checked over to make sure they were ok."

He added that it was not believed the patients were seriously injured.

A spokesman for DFRS said they were called by the ambulance service at 8.45am and they have sent three fire crews - two from Weymouth and one from Dorchester.

One eyewitness said: "I was driving down the Ridgeway and I just saw the trailer jack-knife and it skidded up onto the bank and then it overturned."

The eyewitness said the lorry and trailer hit a blue Renault Megane and ended up facing the wrong way.
