AN AIR and sea search on Portland for a man feared to be in the water has been called off for tonight.
Coastguard teams, Weymouth Lifeboat and police officers supported by the coastguard rescue helicopter have been searching Chesil Beach after belongings including a bag, mobile phone and clothing were found on the shoreline.
The search went on into the evening after the alarm was raised at 2.15pm. It was stood down about 8.30pm.
A Dorset Police spokesman said: "Unfortunately it is believed the owner of the belongings has entered the water and come to harm."
He added: "Police have identified the owner of the items as a man in his 50s from Portland and we are in contact with the family."
It is understood the search will continue at first light on Friday.
