A TEENAGE driver who caused the death of his best friend in a car crash was ordered to be detained for three years yesterday.

A judge told Michael Yau at the High Court in Edinburgh that there was no alternative but to jail him for the offence.

Yau, 19, of Micklehouse Road, Baillieston, Glasgow, drove dangerously at speeds of more than 50mph while approaching a roundabout at the Clydeside expressway in the city on June 4, 2003. He failed to keep proper control of the vehicle, which skidded into an embankment and struck trees.

His passenger and friend Kin Fung Wu, 20, of Ledi Drive, Bearsden, was so seriously injured that he died the following day at the Southern General Hospital, in Glasgow.

Yau, who earlier had admitted causing the death by dangerous driving, was also banned from driving for five years and ordered to sit the extended test.
