IPACA has revealed its plans for modern teaching on Portland with the launch of the construction of the new Maritime House campus.

It was announced last month that work on the academy's new campus is set to begin next week.

The new campus is set to open in September 2016 and will cost £24m.

The campus was initially set to open a year earlier but issues with planning and need for an extra £10m investment caused delays.

The school outlined its timeline for building work, which begins on Monday.

The work is set to be completed on May 27, 2016.

The school says it wants to bring the best possible education to the children of Portland whilst also allowing community use.

Gary Fooks, director of entrepreneurship IPACA, said: “We want to create a small school environment within a big school setting but bring the benefits of a big school as well.”

The new campus is set to be one of the biggest school projects in the history of the island and will benefit not just the children but also the wider community who will have use of facilities such as the swimming pool and sports hall.

Mr Fooks said: “Any school should not just be for the children but the whole community.

“Nothing like this has happened in living memory.”

The education landscape is set to change on the island with Royal Manor and Southwell campuses being returned to the county council.

One of the initial objections to the campus was surrounding the issue of traffic in the area.

The school is planning to put on buses for students.

It will also work with the county council to encourage students and staff to cycle and walk to school.

The entire campus will be connected to superfast broadband and serviced by Cloud technology allowing students to access learning materials throughout the campus.

Once they are set-up, building firm Wates Construction will also hold drop-ins on Fridays to listen to any concerns residents have surrounding the project.
