RESIDENTS are being advised to be vigilant after reports of a telephone scam.

The South Dorset Revenues and Benefits Partnership is advising residents after a series of reports of a council tax scam.

Residents have been asked for their bank details in order to receive a cash refund backdated to 1993.

Stuart Dawson, Purbeck District Council, West Dorset District Council and Weymouth & Portland Borough Council’s head of revenue and benefits, advised people never to give out details on the phone.

He said: “We have received reports of a telephone scam where people have been told they are entitled to a cash refund backdating to 1993 and have been asked to provide their bank details.

“I would encourage residents not to give out personal details over the phone and to remain vigilant, and if possible, keep a close eye on vulnerable older family members or neighbours.

“If you do receive any suspicious calls please contact the police.”

Anyone wishing to report a phone scam should call the police on the non-emergency 101 number.
