A CONCERT of contrasts is on the cards for West Dorset on June 6.
The New Elizabethan Singers will take to the stage at the United Church in East Street, Bridport, from 7.30pm.
They will perform three contrasting works - Antonín Dvo?ák, probably best known for his “New World Symphony”, but his “Mass in D major” was written in 1887 for the dedication of a new chapel in Bohemia.
It’s everything you would expect from a late Romantic composer who followed on from Mendelssohn and Brahms.
Leonard Bernstein wrote West Side Story but he was also commissioned to write The Chichester Psalms by the Dean of Chichester Cathedral in 1965.
Being thrifty, he adapted pieces that had been originally intended for West Side Story and another planned musical, and added some Hebrew Psalms.
The 23rd Psalm, sung by a boy treble as though a young David, will undoubtedly bring a lump to the throat of both audience and choir alike.
Well-known for Christmas carols, John Rutter’s Gloria, written in 1974 for an American choir, was his first extended composition but remains one of his most popular works.
Tickets cost £12 and are free for under 18s. They are available from Goadsby and Bridport Music in South Street.
