A DORCHESTER-based supporting older peoplewants to raise awareness of the effects of being a victim of scams.

It comes after a new Age UK survey found that 53 per cent of people aged 65 and over believe they have been targeted by fraudsters. Three quarters of those targeted said they had lost money.

Age UK Dorchester wants to raise awareness of scams, which it says can have 'serious consequences' for people’s physical and mental health, as well as their relationships and finances.

"The degree of sophistication used online or over the phone to defraud is frightening, but so too is the approach shown by the perpetrators of more traditional forms of the offence, such as 'door steppers' who use high-pressure selling tactics," a spokesman said.

Residents are urged never to rush into anything, ensure companies they deal with is reputable, know who is it on the doorstep, be aware of pension scams and to always report incidents.

Older people who feel they have been pressured into signing a contract for goods or services they didn't want can contact the information and advice team on 01305 269444.
