AUSTRALIAN shed phenomenon set to prove an important community tool on Portland.

The new community initiative The Man Shed, will be launched tomorrow (weds) on the Isle.

Run in conjunction with Island Community Action, the Man Shed in Chiswell, is a workshop for men to meet sharing skills, memories and general camaraderie in an informal, welcoming atmosphere.

It will be a large shed spare for men to use, full of tools and resources, where the gentlemen of the Isle can take on individual and community projects.

An Island Community Action spokesman said they hoped the project would involve upcycling old furniture.

The Shed Movement began in Australia when men realised they could come together around practical tasks on a regular basis, particularly if they had a designated place or workshop where tools and work in progress could be stored. There are now more than 900 sheds in Australia.
