WEYMOUTH has received further recognition as a seaside destination of choice.

The resort was listed as number one in a guide to the top 10 UK seaside towns on travel website dealchecker.co.uk

It was included in the list alongside destinations such as Brighton, Newquay and fellow Dorset town Poole.

Other destinations included were St Andrews in Scotland, Dartmouth in Devon, Hunstanton in Norfolk, Southwold in Suffolk, Whitby in North Yorkshire and Tenby in Pembrokeshire.

Weymouth was described as a ‘buzzing seaside town’ with attractions such as Portland Bill, Portland Castle and the Pavilion mentioned.

The recognition has been celebrated by local councillors, who hope it will provide a further boost to the town’s tourism.

The guide’s entry for Weymouth reads: “With a Blue Flag beach, Weymouth is a buzzing seaside town.

“You have plenty of sites to explore such as the Portland Bill Lighthouse, the Pavilion Theatre, and Portland Castle.

“It's right on the stunning Jurassic Coast - you'll be blown away by wildlife, the architecture, and views.

“Get those cameras at the ready.”

Conservative group leader on Weymouth and Portland Borough Council Cllr Ian Bruce said "While we residents of Weymouth know we have the best seaside town in the UK it is brilliant that those selling holidays think so too.

“The council is keen to promote all parts of our economy and being the Best Seaside Town is the perfect shop front to bringing in all forms of investment and jobs."

Newly elected borough councillor Jason Osborne, who runs the Leam Hotel in Weymouth, said it was the resort's beach with its safe bathing waters that was the main pull for the town.

He added: "It's also got the excitement of the harbour and it's quite a commercial harbour, which is always nice for people to sit and have a coffee and watch the boats coming in and out and all the activity.

"Also it's nice and flat, a lot of people who I meet who are of retirement age say they like it because it's flat."

Earlier this year Weymouth was recognised as having the second best beach in the country and one of the top ten in Europe in the TripAdvisor Traveller's Choice awards.

Cllr Osborne said the latest accolade was just another reason for the resort to be positive about the future.

He said: "I think Weymouth it going places and it's exciting to be involved with that."
