DORSET County Council is urging people to take extra precautions along the Jurassic Coast after a crack opened up near the South West Coast Path.

As reported in the Echo, a large crack approximately two foot wide and about 50 yards long, appeared in the cliffs on West Cliff near West Bay.

Ahead of the bank holiday weekend and half-term week and an expected influx of tourists to the Jurassic Coast, the county council is reminding people that it is still safe to enjoy the coastline as long as the hazards are treated with respect.

The Jurassic Coast is a naturally eroding stretch of coastline, but attracts thousands of visitors each year with many enjoying the South West Coast Path.

Cllr Peter Finney, cabinet member for environment, said: “The crack itself is at least 100 metres from the path and 'while the immediate area of the crack should be avoided, it does not pose a danger for anyone who sticks to the marked footpath and takes the advice on safety notices.

“The Jurassic Coast is very much open for business. Whether you want to walk, hunt for fossils, stroll around our local towns or lie on the beach you can be assured of a warm welcome and an exciting voyage of discovery for all the family.”

A spokesman for the council added that the crack “clearly shows” that there is a possible hazard of rock falls and urged people to stay away from the base of the cliffs.

The presence of the crack clearly shows that there is a possible hazard of rock falls along this coast and it is safer The council also released four statements of advice ahead of the weekend.

These are: 1. Always stay away from the cliffs - landslides and rock falls are more likely to happen after heavy rainfall or storms but can, and do, happen anytime 2. Mud flows may extend across the beaches – be alert, they can look deceptively like the beach itself!

3. Never ignore a warning sign – they are there for a good reason - your safety 4. Check tide times before you set off on a beach walk or fossil hunting adventure to avoid being cut off!
