TWO groups of unsung heroes are being thanked by a Weymouth man after they helped save his dog’s life when a coastal walk turned into a disaster.

Craig Ullah was walking up towards the South West Coast Path near the Riviera Hotel at 3pm on Saturday when his English bull terrier cross Millie cut an artery in her front leg.

The 32-year-old said the first thing he noticed was blood pouring out of Millie’s leg and ‘bloody footprints everywhere’.

Two groups of people rallied round upon hearing Craig’s cries for help, with one group calling a nearby vet and another group giving Craig and Millie a lift to the vets.

Craig said he wants to thank the two groups of people, together with staff at the Riviera Hotel, who supplied towels to help mop up Millie’s blood.

He added: “These people helped save my dog’s life and I cannot thank them enough. I didn’t have any mobile phone credit or any money on me and without them I don’t know what I would have done. I was so lucky they came along.

“Millie was taken to the Vets4Pets surgery inside Pets at Home, Weymouth where her leg was stitched up and bandaged.

“The vets told me she could have permanent damage to her front paw, but in my view it could have been much worse.”

Six-year-old Millie is now recovering at home with Craig, who lives on Dorchester Road in Weymouth.

Craig said based on the vet’s opinion of the cut he believes Millie stepped on a razor blade or a piece of broken glass during the coastal walk.

He advised walkers, residents and holidaymakers nearby to take care on the cliffs, adding: “A child could have stepped on whatever Millie did and seriously hurt themselves.

“I would urge everyone walking along the South West Coast Path near the Riviera Hotel to be careful and just watch where they are walking.

“I am glad Millie is safe and if anyone from either of the groups reads this I want them to know just how grateful I am.”

Staff member at the Rivera Hotel Jemma Mcmanus, who was working on the day of the incident, said it was a case of doing whatever the hotel could to help Craig and Millie.

She added: “We are glad to hear Millie is safe and that she is now recovering.”
