A COMMUNITY farm has once again been targeted by thieves, leaving the owners wondering 'why do we bother?'

Fancy's Farm on Portland was struck overnight on Saturday with thieves cutting a hole in the fencing and making off with a broken strimmer.

Although, only one item was taken this time, repairs will have to be made and it has left the volunteers feeling disheartened.

Su Illsley said: "We have now got security on site- we've got no choice in the matter.

"It's unfortunate we have had to resort to that- we've here for the community, everybody is working as a volunteer and when people come along and do things like this, we think 'why do we bother?'"

Su said one explanation that only a single item was taken could be that the alarms sounded and scared the thieves off.

"You can't really get through the fence without bolt cutters or that type of tool, so they must have taken something with them to cut through it.

"Everything is alarmed and monitored so maybe they got that far and realised then left.

"But it's a real pain.

"The funny thing is that if someone had come and asked us whether you could borrow a strimmer, of course we would have said yes. When things like this happen, you just feel like you're banging your head against a brick wall."

As reported in the Echo, the farm was targeted in March last year and more than £600 was taken from the till and donation pot. The community rallied round to do what it could to help and the farm bolstered its security.

Police are investigating the incident.

A spokesman said: "We were called to a report of a break-in at an outbuilding at Fancy's Farm.

"A JCB petrol strimmer was stolen between 10pm on Saturday and 8am on Sunday.

"Witnesses and anyone with information should call 101 quoting 24:106"
