RETAIL businesses in West Dorset are being offered rate relief of up to £1,500 from the district council.

At the district council’s Executive Committee meeting in March, councillors agreed to award retail businesses rate relief if their property had a rateable value of £50,000 or less. The relief was included in the 2014/15 rates bill which was sent in March 2015.

West Dorset District Council leader, Cllr Anthony Alford, said: “We want to support local businesses where we can. Helping the local economy is one of the council’s key priorities.

“If businesses are experiencing hardship then we would like to hear from them.

“The district council will use government guidance to determine if businesses qualify for rate relief under this scheme.”

It has been estimated that more than 770 businesses within the West Dorset area may benefit from receiving the increased relief.
