ALL Saints School raised more than £1000 for victims of the Nepalese earthquake.

Pupils at the Wyke Regis school were said to have been 'touched' by the stories of the people struggling in the aftermath of the disaster.

The school decided to hold a spontaneous non-uniform day shortly after the earthquake and raised double the amount they usually do from non-uniform days.

The fundraising was to go to ‘Shelter Box’ who provide emergency shelter and vital supplies to support communities around the world overwhelmed by disaster and humanitarian crisis.

The non-uniform day raised £1,055 to go towards the charity which is providing supplies to people in affected areas.

Headteacher Paul Gray, was impressed with the response of the pupils.

He said: “It was extra special.

“When we said it to them, we were on the stage and we said, 'shall we just announce this' and there was a spontaneous round of applause.”

The school held the fundraiser the following day and raised the staggering amount.

Despite raising such a large amount, Mr Gray hasn’t been surprised by the response.

He said: “It’s really touched the hearts and minds of the whole school.

“We weren’t surprised because they are very caring.

“I suppose it has touched the hearts of all of us really when we see the scale of the destruction and the stress that people have experienced.

“We just put up our mission statement and it is about the fullness of life. We have got a responsibility to bring that to other people.”

The school then presented a cheque to Ian Brooke, Rotarian and local ShelterBox representative.

Mr Brooke has been blown away by the response not just at the school but across the area.

He said: “This disaster has touched hearts across all the borough, in our Rotary street collection we collected more than three thousand pounds and now this. The people of Weymouth are amazing.”

The school is continuing to try and raise money to help those affected by the crisis with penny boxes throughout the school for pupils to donate.

More than £50million has been raised by the Disasters Emergency Committee to date for the Nepalese earthquake appeal.

The school is continuing to raise money for good causes with a non-uniform day for Breast Cancer UK and four members of staff have walked the London Marathon route in breast cancer t-shirts to raise money.
