A WEYMOUTH village will be opening its gardens for a special weekend.

Residents of Sutton Poyntz will be opening their garden gates as part of a weekend event on June 27 and 28.

Between 12pm and 5pm each day, 17 individual gardens will be open boasting some wonderful views of the famous White Horse on Osmington Hill. There will also be a whole street where the residents will welcome everyone to view all their front gardens.

Other events taking place across the weekend will include an art exhibition, a competition for children where they look for the hidden butterfly in each garden and the Mission hall will have a variety of stalls including crafts, plants and tombola.

The Orchard behind the Mission Hall will be transformed into an area for refreshments, where visitors will be able to sample a range of homemade sandwiches, cakes and pastries.

The event will raise funds for Cancer Research UK and Water Aid.

A spokesman for the group said they were hoping that lots of people would come along for the weekend and see the gardens in bloom.

She said: “Sutton Poyntz is a picture-postcard village near Weymouth. With its unique beauty and hidden treasures of old houses and cottages plus a duck pond opposite the pub, it is surely a place to visit.

“Already well known for its biennial Victorian Street Fayre, this year the village is organising an Open Garden Weekend and we hope we can tempt readers to come and enjoy this event.”

She added: “The proceeds from this event will go to Cancer Research UK and Water Aid. The Victorian pumping station and Water Aid offices are within the village and many residents are involved in raising money for third world countries without fresh clean water.

“We hope that those of you who have supported the Street Fayre will also support this event. You will be sure of a very warm welcome.”

Entry will be by programme available in advance from local venues and on the day in the Mission Hall, £5 per adult or £8 for both days. Parking will be free.
