VETERANS marched along Weymouth seafront today to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

The military parade set off at around 11am following a short service at the Weymouth Cenotaph.

This year's parade marks 70 years since VE (Victory in Europe) Day.

A band from HM Royal Marines in Plymouth will lead the march, followed by the principal division the Royal British Legion.

Almost 2,000 veterans, several marching bands and 80 historic military vehicles took taking part the parade following the open-air service on the seafront.

The ceremony featured hymns, prayers and the laying of wreaths at the Weymouth Cenotaph.

The veterans and crowds were joined by councillors, local mayors and local dignitaries.

Crowds crammed the seafront to watch proceedings as the sun shone on the town.

People clapped and cheered as the veterans and the historic vehicles went past.

MP for South Dorset Richard Drax, was touched to see so many people out honouring the armed forces.

He said: “This event pays tribute to our armed forces and secondly we’re paying tribute to our great veterans.

“We have to remember the ones we see here are the one came back.

“It’s great to see so many thousands of people here to honour our armed forces.”
