A WEYMOUTH man who was seen swinging a pickaxe as he walked down a road has been jailed.

Lee Carr, 34, who is currently in Exeter Prison, appeared at Weymouth Magistrates via video link to admit threatening behaviour, possession of a sharp pointed article and assaulting a constable.

Prosecuting, Elizabeth Valera said on June 1 at 10pm police were called to Acland Road, Dorchester by members of the public who saw Carr walking with a pickaxe and swinging it at bins.

Carr told police that he had been drinking and was taking the pickaxe to a friend.

In relation to his second offence, Ms Valera said at 4.20am on June 11 police received reports of a man lying in King Street, Weymouth.

She said Carr, who had had a "considerable amount" to drink, "growled like a bear" at PC Billington.

PC Billington "feared he was going to be assaulted" as Carr got up and began moving "rapidly towards him with his fists clenched" telling him "you are going to die".

Mitigating, Simon Lacey said Carr was in a "poor mental state" and said he did not mean to harm the officer.

He said: “He believes he had been doing quite well.

“He is on medication for a multiple personality disorder.

“His girlfriend has lost a baby she was expecting and his father had not been well.

“He did not mean any harm to the officer and he is sorry for any trouble.”

Carr was given two one month custodial sentences, to run consecutively to his current sentence, and was ordered to pay court charges amounting to £230. Magistrates ordered the destruction of the pickaxe.
