MOTORISTS are being urged to slow down on a Dorchester road following claims they are driving at more than twice the speed limit.

A local councillor has been alerted by local residents to the problem of drivers allegedly speeding on Poundbury Road.

Town and district councillor David Taylor was contacted by Robin Bonner, who lives on the road and claims he regularly sees driving at speeds of around 70mph along the 30mph stretch of road between the industrial estates and the edge of town.

Mr Bonner said: "I have not been out with a speed gun but I have driven all my life and I can tell speeds of vehicles.

"It ranges from those who drive sensibly to those who don't care one way or the other and do 70mph or 80mph."

Cllr Taylor said: "I was contacted by Mr Bonner as it's getting worse and worse, cars are not abiding to any speed limits on the the road whatsoever."

He added that the problem also extended into Normandy Way as motorists used the two roads to avoid busy junctions in Dorchester town centre.

Cllr Taylor said: "Because they are using it as a cut through they realise how quick and easy it is and they are getting faster and faster."

Mr Bonner said that he was about to have two feet trimmed off the hedges by his driveway because the combination of parked cars and speeding vehicles along the road made it so dangerous to get out.

He said: "I do appreciate everybody in Dorchester is having problems with parking on the side of the road and we are no different here.

"The only difference we have got is the people who live in other parts of the town don't have cars going past at 60mph or 70mph."

Cllr Taylor said there were also safety issues for walkers crossing the road to access Poundbury Hillfort.

He added that he would be taking the matter up with Dorset Road Safe to see if they could initiate some kind of enforcement action to catch speeding motorists in the area.

Mr Bonner welcomed the news that Cllr Taylor was taking up the issue and said that local residents just want some kind of enforcement along the route.

He said: "We just want somebody to so something where someone gets caught and word gets out because at the moment it's completely open to them abusing it."
