GET crafty with nature at Dorset Wildlife Trust’s first-ever art workshop.

The charity will host the event at its Urban Wildlife Centre in Corfe Mullen this summer, using inspiration from nearby nature reserve Upton Heath.

The workshops will be led by local freelance artist and curator, Julie Herring who will teach observational drawing skills, inspired by nature, along with practical hints and tips to get the best out of your artistic talent.

Julie has studied fine art painting and natural history illustration and has a great interest in the design and patterns found in nature.

She said: “One of my greatest pleasures is to spend time outdoors in the natural environment and drawing is a way of getting closer to it.

“The art activity can improve your well-being by feeling connected.

"When you look at wild flowers, trees or wildlife in detail, your enjoyment is enhanced.

“Nowadays, our every-day, busy lives often mean we are working in solitude, using technology and working indoors a majority of the time.

“This lifestyle excludes us from the simple pleasures of the natural world. Being outside in the fresh air, in a beautiful landscape, drawing and sharing artistic views with other people, can be very healthy, sociable and a rewarding experience.”

DWT learning and interpretation officer for The Great Heath, Nicky Hoar, said: “We are excited about exploring a new way of enjoying and being inspired by the nature of our heaths.

“This is a chance for people to get closer to nature and find new ways to interpret and record what they see.”

A creative kids art workshop will be held on Thursday, August 13, from 10am – 1pm (cost £5 per child, accompanying adults free), and an adults workshop will be held on Thursday, September 17, from 10am-1pm (£5 per adult), both at DWT’s Urban Wildlife Centre in Corfe Mullen.

Refreshments will be provided. Participants should wear suitable footwear for (weather permitting) a short walk on Upton Heath. The event is suitable for ages 10 and up, no unaccompanied children. Booking is essential on 01202 692033 or email nhoar@dorsetwildlifetrust.org.uk
