A MAN has been jailed for three years after a ‘vicious and unprovoked’ bar room attack in Weymouth.

Matthew John Montana, 50, from Weymouth, was given the prison sentence at Dorchester Crown Court for causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

The court heard that on Wednesday, June 10, Montana rushed into Wyke Regis Social Club on Chamberlaine Road, grabbed the victim, a local man in his 50s, by his shoulder and hit him over the head at least three times with the pint glass the victim was drinking from.

The victim then fell to the floor, as Montana hit him over the head with a bar stool several times, the court heard.

The court heard that the victim had bought a car from Montana and was due to pay the final amount on the day of the assault.

Following the attack, the victim was then rushed to Dorset County Hospital for treatment to a cut to the top of his head, which left his skull partially exposed.

Montana was arrested later that evening at his home address.

He admitted the charge of causing GBH with intent at an earlier court hearing on June 18, Detective Constable Sarah Desmond, of Weymouth CID, said: “This was a vicious and unprovoked assault.

“I hope the sentence handed out today proves that violent behaviour such as this will not be tolerated in Dorset and you will be dealt with robustly by the courts.”
