THERE was no mountain high enough for a teacher and three family members who took on an epic charity challenge.

Lorraine Lllewellyn, deputy head teacher at Chickerell Primary Academy, recently scaled Ben Nevis mountain in Scotland, Scaffell Pike mountain in the Lake District and Mount Snowdon in Wales in memory of her "wonderful and devoted" mum Ruth Hampshire.

Ruth lost her battle with terminal cancer last summer aged 71 and spent her last few months in Weldmar’s Joseph Weld Hospice in Dorchester.

Lorraine completed the three peaks challenge with her niece Billie-Rose Hampshire and two sisters Audrey Hampshire and Maria Tucker.

She said that thanks to staff at the hospice the group had "a few weeks of being daughters and grandchildren" instead of carers during her mum’s final days.

Lorraine added: “This challenge was thought up by us as a way to give something back to the hospice, and so far we have raised roughly £1,000 which is fantastic.

“The Joseph Weld Hospice stepped in and saved us. They gave our mum back her dignity, took her pain away, treated her like the wonderful lady she was and made her feel as if she was having, in her words, ‘a little holiday with her girls’.

“We made wonderful memories that we’ll cherish forever and mum’s smiles at the hospice helped us survive the most dreadful time.”

The fundraising group of four set out on their challenge on August 14, first driving to Scotland to conquer Ben Nevis mountain, 1,344 metres above sea level.

After this the group drove through the night to reach Scaffell Pike mountain on August 16, and Mount Snowdon in Wales on August 17.

Lorraine said: “We are all delighted that we conquered three mountains without any injuries apart from a few blisters.

“Mum was the most wonderful lady; she had a wonderfully positive outlook on life and was always smiling.

“She was a volunteer at the Weldmar shop in Weymouth and would do anything she could to help others. Mum is greatly missed by everyone who knew her.”

The fundraising group have said a massive thank you must go to everyone that has donated towards their challenge so far.

They said everyone’s donations will help the hospice continue to care for others and support their families during difficult times.

The group said the challenge will be something they will always remember and has inspired them to carry on fundraising in the future.
