Motorists have spoken of their frustration at the lengthy delays faced during “essential” roadworks in Weymouth.

Lanehouse Rocks Road at the Lynch Lane junction has been dug up as Wessex Water as completes vital work on the town’s water system.

But commuters have faced traffic queues during the works, with the queues often winding back as far as the All Saints’ School in Wyke Regis – almost two miles away.

The traffic has been particularly bad during rush hour commutes, but there have been steady queues throughout the day as well.

It is believed that barring any last-minute problems, the roadworks should be removed either this morning or at some point during today.

Mickey Jones, chief executive of DJ Property which owns the nearby Granby Industrial Estate and Chickerell Link Park, said the works had been a “disaster”.

He said: “It seems that at peak times, it’s been a disaster zone, a complete no-go area.

“During the day, it is bearable but if you get caught on Lynch Lane, because there are also cars parked on the side of the road, it can be difficult to get out of because of the volume of traffic.

“It hasn’t been managed very well really, they should have put out no parking cones on Lynch Lane, and the traffic lights should have been managed manually at peak times. People tend to be forgiving if it’s just for a day or two, but if it gets any longer I think people might start to really get annoyed. I do have a lot of sympathy for businesses along Lynch Lane, because they must be losing out because of the works.”

David Harris, county councillor for the area, said: “Clearly, any disruption that it creates is very annoying especially for the people that use the road during rush-hour.

“But, unfortunately, the utility companies have to do some of the work that they need to do and are asked to do by the public, and sometimes that means digging up the road.

“It’s a necessary evil, clearly the companies have to do it, and hopefully by the end of the week they will be gone.”

Ian Drury, a spokesman for Wessex Water, said: “Our essential water supply work in Lanehouse Rocks Road required traffic lights, so to minimise delays the lights were manually controlled.

“Engineers completed the essential work a day earlier than expected and the road will be back to normal for Wednesday morning’s rush hour.

“Unfortunately, it is inevitable that work on busy roads will cause some delays and we apologise to motorists for any inconvenience caused.”
