A TEENAGER is 'lucky to be alive' after he fell from the top of Weymouth's multi-storey car park.

Kyle Mcgarvey, 17, from Weymouth, suffered a broken back and head injuries after falling about 50ft from the building in Commercial Road on Sunday morning.

It is believed his fall may have been broken by a bush.

Kyle, who works as a barber, was treated by paramedics before being rushed to Dorset County Hospital where he remains. Emergency services were alerted about 8.30am.

A picture of Kyle was posted on his Facebook page showing him in hospital.

A message accompanying the picture said: "Thank you for all the messages I am okay I've broken my back lucky to be alive."

It is understood Kyle attended a party on Saturday night but his mother Rachael Mcgarvey said she is not entirely sure of events which led to Kyle being at the car park and how he came to fall.

She highlighted the fact the car park has no barriers at the top and said something needs to be done.

A number of people have died falling from the top in recent years.

MsMcgarvey said: "I spoke to Kyle and said he is very lucky to be alive and he realises that. I think he had a very lucky escape.

"What is it going to take for someone to realise something needs to be done about barriers at the top of the multi-storey car park?"

She added: "Kyle has broken his back and we are waiting for the outcome for how that's going to affect the rest of his life. All the doctors and staff have been amazing.

"He came off the top of the building and I think he has hit the bush and scraped the wall and that broke the fall.

"I've been spending most of the time at the hospital. A couple of his friends and the family have been in to see him.

"He was in an enormous amount of pain during the night; it was horrible to see.

"For the foreseeable future he is on bed rest."

To add to the family's distress, Ms Mcgarvey claimed that someone had taken Kyle's bank card which he had left in his bag on Saturday night, and used it to order pizza.

She said: "I just can't believe how low some people will go. He left his bag at the party he had been to so anyone could have taken it. Thankfully his card has now been cancelled.

"It's just not what we need on top of this."

Brian Parker, managing director of Britannia Parking which operates the multi-storey, said: "We are unclear at the present time over the exact circumstances – we have reviewed CCTV footage and cannot find anything untoward at the car park, which is locked overnight from midnight to 6.30am.

“We have not as yet been contacted by the police. We will fully co-operate with the authorities and look forward to receiving official clarity on the situation."
