WEYMOUTH seafront was flooded with Santas this weekend as hundreds gathered for the festive Chase the Pudding race.

The event, supported by Weymouth and Portland Borough Council, had festive spirits running high and was launched by Weymouth's panto Dame together with Mayor of Weymouth and Portland, Cllr Christine James.

Participants got themselves warmed up with a 'Santa Stretch' routine before starting the jog from the Weymouth Pavilion end of the beach to the Groyne at Greenhill and back again - a distance of around 5km.

Cllr James, didn't hesitate to get involved and cheered on her daughter and granddaughter who were taking part.

She said: "This is a fantastic event and something that gets bigger and bigger every year. It's so nice to see so many people down here today. The seafront doesn't get used much in the winter months but this is a great example of how we can use it. It's great to see people getting into the festive spirit."

All race entries and event sponsorship will go to Weymouth charity the Will Mackaness Trust.

Will Mackaness was an avid sportsman who took a full and active part in all aspects of school life, despite undergoing intensive treatment for the most aggressive form of brain tumour.

One of his passions was watersports especially windsurfing. Therefore the trust’s aim is to give more watersport opportunities to the youngsters of Weymouth and Portland, so they too, can experience the fun and exhilaration of windsurfing, sailing, paddle boarding and kayaking for themselves.

Trust Director Pam Govier said: "This is just a marvellous event and we have been so lucky with the weather. There's a fantastic turn out, not only the Santas but the crowds of people watching too. I want to thank everyone for their support, including Weymouth and Portland Borough Council and the Pavilion."

Crowds cheered on the Santas and festive characters as they crossed the finish line and were handed a mince pie.

One participant, Jack Lewis said: "I'm absolutely exhausted but it was great fun. It's a lovely way to get right into the festive spirit with less than a week to go. The run is a lot longer than I remember when I was training but I'm glad to help raise some money for charity. I'll definitely be doing it again next year."
