A 25-year-old man has been killed following a collision early this morning.

Emergency services were called to Holt Lane near Wimborne at around 5.30am today after reports of an incident involving a Ford Mondeo and a white van.

The Mondeo, which was being driven by the young man, left the road and hit a tree.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

His next of kin have been informed and the coroner notified.

Dorset Police have now launched an investigation into the crash and are asking for witnesses and anyone with information to contact them.

A passing motorist called 999 to alert the emergency services.

The driver of the van has been arrested on suspicion of driving offences.

Holt Lane is closed between Stocks Inn at Furzehill and God's Blessing Lane as emergency services work and the police start their investigations.

 

 

It is expected to reopen shortly.

A spokesperson from Dorset Police said: "Police received reports of a very serious collision on Holt Lane, Holt near Wimborne at around 5.30am this morning involving two vehicles.

"Road closures have been put in place between Stocks Inn at Furzehill and God’s Blessing Lane.

"The emergency services attended and the roads are expected to remain closed for a number of hours while they carry out their duties.

"Motorists are asked to avoid the area at this time."

The road is closed between Stocks Inn at Furzehill and God’s Blessing Lane while emergency services deal with the incident.

It is expected to be closed for some time to allow collision investigators to examine the scene.

Police Sergeant Joe Pardey, of Dorset Police’s Traffic Unit, said: “The exact time of the collision is unknown at this stage and we are appealing for witnesses to come forward urgently to help with our enquiries.

“I am urging anyone who witnessed the collision, or manner of driving of either vehicle prior to the collision, to please call Dorset Police urgently.”

A 31-year-old Wimborne man has been arrested on suspicion of driving offences and is currently assisting police with their enquiries.

Two fire crews from Wimborne attended, but have now left the scene.

A spokesperson from the Dorset Fire and Rescue Service said firefighters assisted with "scene safety".
