Elsewhere, people climbed cliffs above recent rockfalls in a day of wild weather in Dorset.

Photographer James Loveridge spotted people scrambling above a rockfall at East Cliff at West Bay while wave watchers on West Bay seafront had to move swiftly to avoid being caught by rough waves crashing over the barriers.

And on Portland, wave watchers were soaked by a huge wave which crashed at Red Crane blowhole. Peter Staddon, who posted a video on the Facebook Page Isle of Portland Past and Present, said it was lucky no one was hurt.

The post has been commented on dozens of times, with several people saying the onlookers were lucky not to have been dragged into the sea.

Another photographer, Sam Rose, also caught a picture of wave watchers taking pictures as the sea crashed around them.

It comes after a day of wild weather, with alerts for high winds and rough seas in place across the Dorset coast.

Earlier today, drivers were being warned of spray on the causeway over to Portland. Flood alerts – meaning residents should be prepared – are still in place for rivers and streams in West Dorset.

Flood alerts for the coastline have now been lifted. But there looks to be more rain, with showers forecast for much of tomorrow and into next week.

A large section of cliff near Freshwater Beach Holiday Park collapsed a few days ago – with experts warning that more of the cliff could fall due to it being pounded by torrential rain in the past few days.

People are also being urged to stay away from the top and base of the cliff where it has collapsed.
