TWO people were struck by a tree after a tree was blown over in a west Dorset village.

Emergency services were called to North Chideock just before 3.30pm after a tree was toppled by strong winds outside the Church of Our lady, Queen of Martyrs and St Ignatius.

The road is currently closed along North Road between the junction with the A35 and the village.

Eyewitness Chris Seal said: "I think the lady walks there every day. She had just come out of the church.

"She is lucky to be alive. The tree came down on the power line.

"The community were out in force with chainsaws helping."

A Dorset Police spokesman said: “We were called at 3.27pm by the ambulance service to reports of a tree that had fallen on two people.

“The road is completely blocked.

“There is one female casualty who is being treated by paramedics. The local authority has also been informed.”

One person was take to Dorset County Hospital for reatment.

A spokeswoman for South Western Ambulance Service, said: "We were called at 3.19pm to a tree which had fallen on two patients.

"One of the patients was complaining of back pain and was taken to Dorset County Hospital. The second patient was treated at the scene by paramedics."
