A WOMAN has been airlifted to hospital after suffering serious injuries in a two-vehicle crash.

The incident happened earlier this afternoon a mile south of Piddlehinton on Slyer's Lane.

Emergency services were called to the scene on the B3143 at around 12.50pm.

Police, paramedics and firefighters attended the scene.

Two pumps from Dorchester Fire Station assisted the ambulance by releasing one woman who was trapped in a car.

The vehicles involved include a red Citroen C1 registered to a company from Southampton and a green Renault Laguna registered to a woman from Dorchester.

A spokesman for South Western Ambulance Service confirmed there were two casualties.

He said: "There was one casualty with a leg injury and a wrist injury. They have gone to Dorset County Hospital by road ambulance.

"Another casualty was trapped in the vehicle with leg injuries and it looks like they are going to Southampton General by air ambulance."

A spokesman for Dorset Police said the injuries suffered are not thought to be life-threatening.

A spokeswoman for Dorset Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called at 12.55pm. Two crews from Dorchester attended. It looks as though it was a two vehicle road traffic collision.

"One female casualty needed to be cut out of the vehicle by the firefighters. The roof had to come off.

"The firefighters that weren't involved cutting free the roof were helping ambulance colleagues with the other casualty."

Firefighters left the scene at 2pm.

Slyer's Lane remained closed until 3.11pm whilst police waited for the vehicles to be recovered.

The incident led to delays in the Dorchester area, with another collision taking place around the same time on the A35.

This collision took place before the junction to Poundbury.

A police spokesperson said: "It is a no injury crash involving a blue Honda Jazz and a blue Nissan Almera registered to a Poole man."

Heavy traffic developed in the eastbound direction of the A35 before Monkeys Jump roundabout to the A37 and B3150.

Dorset Police are now investigating the cause of the collision at Slyer's Lane.
