PLANS have been lodged to build a new petrol station at Asda in Weymouth.

The supermarket, located on Newstead Road, has put in a planning application to introduce an automated four-pump filling station.

The card-only station would have eight filling locations and is targeted at existing shop customers.

The development, if approved, would take place on the eastern boundary of the site which is currently occupied by parking spaces and the site access road.

The station will work under a one-way system, with access from the north west corner and an exit from the south west corner.

In order for the station to be built, the internal arrangement of the car park would have to be reconfigured.

Asda would remove 25 parking spaces, reducing the total number of spaces available from 440 to 415.

The reconfiguration would also realign the northern section of the site access road.

Amendments would also be made to allow safer access for visiting oil tankers.

In a transport statement submitted as part of the planning application, Asda say: "Deliveries to the petrol filling station will take place outside of peak trading times, when vehicle movements within the car park and to the petrol filling station are low.

"An oil tanker will deliver to the proposed petrol filling station three to five times per week dependent upon trading volumes.

"The timing and number of deliveries to the petrol filling station are controlled by Asda and will ensure minimal impact on the operation of the car park, circulating traffic and pedestrian routes to the store entrance."

Despite the reduction in parking spaces, Asda state the results of extensive car park occupancy surveys show between 63 and 245 spaces would remain available during the absolute maximum peak period.

Members of the public can comment on the application until April 16.
