RARE footage has emerged showing lobster fishing off Portland more than sixty years ago.

A clip from Pathe News and posted to social media site Facebook has been viewed almost 19,000 times.

The video, just over two minutes long, shows a fisherman, named in the clip as Jack Comben, lowering his rowing boat into the water on one of the cranes, known as a derrick, that can still be seen today along the isle coastline.

Dorset Echo:

The fisherman then climbs down the crane and into the boat before rowing out to the lobster pots.

Dorset Echo:
The footage shows the lobsters being taken from the pots and placed into a basket to be sold.

Dorset Echo:

Then, as the narrator puts it, the fisherman 'goes home, to do it all again tomorrow'.

The clip was filmed in 1949 and shows a rare glimpse of the lobster fishing industry in days gone by.

It was uploaded to the Facebook site of restaurant The Noisy Lobster, which is based at Avon Beach in Christchurch.

Sacha Lys, who provides social media content for the restaurant through her company #SocialSecret, found the clip online and posted it.

She said: "I love local content, and there are amazing things to be found on Facebook and all over the internet.

"This clip really stood out, because it has to do with lobster fishing and is so local.

"As a company, the Noisy Lobster is all about getting produce as locally as possible - only five per cent of the food they serve is from outside Dorset.

"So I'm always on the lookout for relevant content, and this clip, because of the history, is really amazing."

Sacha added: "I love Dorset. It's a lovely community and everyone looks out for each other."

The post on the restaurant's Facebook page reads: "It was a lot harder to get hold of lobsters for fisherman Jack Comben back in the day. Plenty of acrobatics and heights involved for this poor chap."

The post has been shared and 'liked' hundreds of times.

Sacha said: "The amazing thing about Facebook is how far a post like this can travel and how many people it can reach."
