A FAMILIAR face has been made second in command of a historical Dorset organisation.

Antiques Roadshow star Paul Atterbury, who lives in Weymouth, has been elected a Deputy President of The Society of Dorset Men.

The author and TV personality was congratulated by another local resident and screen star, Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes, who is president of the society.

The appointment was made at the society’s 112th AGM held at the Coppleridge Inn at Motcombe.

Mr Atterbury said: “I am pleased and honoured to become a Deputy President of The Society of Dorset Men and to be part of this wonderful county and society. Dorset is such a beautiful county and we are all lucky to live here.”

Welcoming guests, Lord Fellowes pointed to not only the medieval, but the ancient history of Dorset.

“The extraordinary Jurassic Coast, the Cerne Giant, Maiden Castle and several rings of standing stones point back to ancient times.
Dorset gives one a sense of peace – a gift from the county we all love so much.”

The new Dorset Award was introduced, a handsome glass outline of the county, mounted on a wooden plinth. It will be awarded “on an occasional basis to an individual who has achieved something exceptional which enhances the reputation of the county.”
