AN ELDERLY woman was robbed in Poundbury in what police described as a “cowardly incident”.

The 86-year-old woman was walking along Middle Farm Way at around 10am on Monday having visited a local shop when she was approached from behind by a man.

Police said the man stole her handbag, causing her to fall to the ground.

The woman suffered only minor injuries but was said to be badly shaken by the incident.

Detectives have issued an appeal for witnesses or anyone with information about the incident, and have circulated a description of the offender.

He is described as being in his 20s or 30s, tall and of medium build. He was said to be wearing a sweater and looked physically fit.

Detective Sergeant Mark Portelli, of Weymouth CID, said: “This was a cowardly incident on an elderly woman and I am keen to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or saw someone acting suspiciously in the area at the time.

“It is possible the offender may have discarded the handbag nearby, so if anyone sees a large black plastic leather effect handbag or has any more information please contact me on 101.”

Dorchester town and district councillor Molly Rennie said the incident must have been very shocking for the woman but she was glad she was not more seriously hurt. She said: “I’m glad she’s all right. The police would always advise that if somebody is trying to take your bag don’t fight it, just let them take it, nothing is as important as being safe.

“It is pretty horrible having to replace everything but your life and safety is far more important.”

Cllr Rennie added that incidents of this nature were extremely rare in Dorchester and she would not like to think that it would put people off going out and about doing their daily business.

She said: “Dorchester in the main is a very safe place and I think these things are random and opportunistic.”

A local shopkeeper, who did not wish to be named, said: “I think that people in Poundbury are generally in shock. It’s not an every day occurrence.

“I don’t think there’s been a mugging here before.”

Sinead McCarney, who owns Hey Baby in Poundbury, said: “Violent crime is unusual here. In two and a half years, I’ve never heard of any.”

Witnesses and anyone with information should call Dorset Police in confidence on 101 quoting incident number 2:97. Alternatively, call the free and anonymous Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111.
