THE bank holiday weekend is set to go off with a bang as a popular charity fireworks display returns to Weymouth seafront.

This Sunday, August 28, the fireworks display will return to raise money for Weldmar Hospicecare Trust.

The event is entirely sponsored by local businesses and organisations.

This year’s event was described as “touch and go” as to whether it would take place, but once again Weldmar has collaborated with local businesses to make sure the sky will be lit up by fireworks.

The display will start at 9.30pm with a team from Weldmar selling hospice items at a stand on the Esplanade, opposite the Marks & Spencer store, from 10.30am.

From 6pm there will be two mobile trollies walking the length of the Esplanade selling flashing and glowing items.

Jonathan Panton, business fundraising and e-commerce manager at Weldmar, said: “This event has been entirely sponsored by the kindness of the following businesses and organisations.

Weldmar have not used any donated monies to bring this event to Weymouth they will only benefit from the support on the day and evening by selling their items on the seafront. All support will be gratefully received.”

Steve Davies, from Weymouth and Portland Borough Council will once again be manning the public address system, and he gave credit to businesses and Weldmar for putting the event on.

He said: “This particular firework display is now in its third year and it only happens with the support of the businesses, predominantly the seafront businesses and it needs to be said the support of the firework company and the boat company.

They all collaborated and it’s all in support of Weldmar.

“This year it was a little touch and go. With all fundraising events there is always going to be hard work.

“Credit to Weldmar for collaborating with the businesses to get the money to put the display on.

“It’s going to be a wonderful night.

It’s one of the town’s most iconic events. It can be shared by so many people. I think it’s a good way of celebrating what a successful summer season we’ve had.”

Weldmar wanted to thank the following businesses and organisations for their help; Weymouth BID, Weymouth Pavilion, Weymouth and Portland Chamber of Commerce, W&PBC, Lazy Lizard, Aura, Alexandra Gardens Electric Palace, Weymouth Guesthouse and Leaseholders Association, The Boat café, Roundhouse Hotel, Kings Hotel, Master Plan Offshore and Pains Fireworks and SFX for supporting the event.
