TWO MONTHS after losing her left leg in a horrifying accident, a woman from Weymouth is looking to a life beyond disability.

In June, Yasmin Guler was working as a scuba instructor on the island of Cozumel, Mexico and due to return to the UK for a holiday after an absence of 15 months.

Then on June 20, whilst out with on the waves with a group of interns, her legs became tangled in the propeller of the motorboat.

In her blog, Finding My Sea Legs, the 29 year old said that the moment she was taken in by the blades, she thought she was going to die.

She was rescued from the water by the team on the boat as well as a student named Eric and rushed to hospital on the island.

There, after six days and countless operations, her left leg was amputated.

On July 19 she was flown from Mexico to Southampton General Hospital to undergo further treatment to save her right leg.

Now, two months on from the accident, Yasmin has set off on the road to recovery, determined to move forward with her life – with a little help from her friends.

Steph Garan, who grew up with Yasmin in Weymouth, has started a Go Fund Me page to raise money for rehabilitation fees and a state of the art prosthetic.

The ultimate goal is to see Yasmin defy limitations and hike to the top of the UK’s highest three peaks in 2018.

Mrs Garan said: “The accident is pretty horrendous, and it’s not exaggerating to say that she should have died.

“It’s been just over two months now but it feels like a life time ago.

“We’re trying to raise the money because once she goes to hospital in London, it’s not going to be funded by the NHS.

“Going home, for her, is completely not an option. What we want to do is get her into hospital in London.

“If Yasmin wants to go back to her life before, she needs more than an ordinary prosthetic.

“The prosthetic she needs will cost between £45,000 and £50,000, but we’re setting the target at £25,000 as she won’t be ready until next year.

“The speed with which she’s recovering, after what she’s been through, is remarkable.”

The active lifestyle Yasmin enjoyed is detailed in the Go Fund Me page Mrs Garan set up, as well as the goals she has targeted.
