APPRENTICES from across the country took part in a national stone masonry competition at Weymouth College.

Some 20 students arrived at the college for the UK Masonry Skills Challenge - an event aimed at boosting the number of people entering the industry.

The day was organised by Stone Federation Great Britain and Portland's Albion Stone provided the stone.

Federation spokesman John Bysouth said: "The idea of the competition is to provide the apprentices with some training to show what it's like to come into the industry.

"Stone masonry has a lot of relevance today because a lot of our old buildings are in stone and they need to be repaired.

"If you go to the major centres such as the City in London nearly all the new buildings are stone covered so it's as busy today as it's ever been. There is a skills shortage in the stone industry."
