LORD Fellowes of West Stafford gave his seal of approval to a new book charting the 112-year history of the Society of Dorset Men.

The history of the society, which was founded in July 1904, has been captured by its chaplain and historian John Travell, who lives in Dorchester.

Originally an organisation for exiles living in London, the society has been largely based in Dorset since the 1970s and boasts more than 1,100 members.

Dr Travell's illustrated history covers the society from its beginnings in the early 20th century to the present day.

It features a number of topical photographs, some originally published in the Society’s Dorset Year Books, published almost every year since 1904.

Around 80 members and invited guests gathered at Dorset County Museum to launch the book and to hear the society's president, Lord Fellowes of West Stafford who compliment the author on having written a most interesting book.

HM High Sheriff of Dorset Sir Philip Williams joined in the congratulations, as did the Mayor and Mayoress of Dorchester, Tim and Anita Harries.

Downton Abbey creator and Oscar winner Lord Fellowes also penned a foreword to the book.

He wrote: "I am delighted that this account of the Society has been written.

"There is a good deal of fascinating detail to be explored and what pleases me most, is that there is throughout, the strong sense that this Society has always been for all the people of Dorset."

The brainchild of William Watkins and G.R. Crickmay, the society had the support of Thomas Hardy during its early years and the great writer became president in 1907.

Dorchester-born surgeon Sir Frederick Treaves, who famously saved the life of King Edward VII, was also influential during the early stages of the society and was its first president.

The book also covers traditions such as the annual County Dinner and speakers over the years as well as the association with the Dorset Regiment and support for soldiers.

It also covers modern events such as the planting of a cedar of Lebanon tree in the grounds of Minterne House to mark The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012.

The illustrated history of the Society of Dorset Men is on sale from the Tourist Information Centre at Dorchester, Gullivers Bookshop in Wimborne, Books Afloat at Weymouth, Waterstones in Dorchester and Bridport, Dorchester Post Office and the Keep Military Museum in Dorchester.
