A WORLD record holding jigsaw maker has been forced to delay his next challenge due to a lack of supporters coming forward to help.

Earlier this year, Dave Evans, from Weymouth, reached out to potential sponsors to back his next world record attempt for a 50,000 piece puzzle to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday.

But unfortunately, despite his fame from his 2013 world record attempt, a 40,756 piece for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee that collapsed and became a viral sensation, his latest challenge has failed to attract sponsors.

Mr Evans needs to raise £15,000 to £20,000 to make the new puzzle and is now hoping to start the attempt early next year.

Mr Evans said: “The last record became less about my legacy and more about the video that went viral.

“I am doing the new jigsaw to create the legacy of my cutting and me.”

The famous wooden puzzle maker, who first cut puzzles aged 15, recently moved his business from Brewers Quay in Weymouth to Wimborne Market.

Mr Evans said: “Raising sponsorship is never easy and the problem with Guinness World Records is it costs £5500 just for one day for somebody to come down from there and watch you. Then you have all the materials and the wood and pictures and so it runs away with you.”

Mr Evans said he doesn’t want to have to crowd fund as he would prefer sponsors to come forward in person. The traditional cutter is determined to create a legacy, believing he is ‘the best’ at what he does, and the fastest.

He said: “I prefer the idea where people are personally involved. But when you are doing everything yourself it can be a problem to have the time.

“To any sponsors coming forward I can say I would be quite prepared to support what they do too.”

Mr Evans said he believes a summer full of events could be the reason why people haven’t donated to the challenge.

He said: “This summer we have had the Olympics, the Euros and so people have been spending all their money.”

Using traditional birch pine wood, Mr Evans hopes people will come forward so he can beat his previous record and still mark the Queen’s 90th birthday using pictures from the occasion.
