DOG walkers got a 'seal' surprise last week when a curious seal popped into Pirates Cove in Wyke Regis.

Andrew Gill, from Wyke Regis, was out with his wife walking their two dogs on Friday, November 18 when they spotted the inquisitive seal popping its head in and out the water.

Mr Gill said: "I was just taking the dogs for a walk near Pirates Lane – we usually go down there with the dogs and meet up with other owners.

"It was a couple of women who spotted the seal and I happened to have my video camera with me and it has a really powerful zoom on it."

Mr Gill managed to capture the seal's movements as it played in the water. At several moments, the seal looks directly at the camera. Dog walkers caught on the video said the seal was 'marvellous' and a 'beautiful sight'.

Mr Gill said: "I've seen seals down there before but not for a long time. The seal was there for quite a while after I stopped filming."

Mr Gill, who has lived near Pirates Cove for 13 years, used to keep a yacht down on the water and said seals will come up and swim around the boats.

He said: "The seals are drawn to there because they get the black water crabs off the bottom of the sea bed and because of the bass there."

Dorset Wildlife Trust have been recording seal sightings in the area since 2014. According to the conservation charity, the UK is home to the harbour seal and grey seal, both which can be spotted along the Dorset coast.

Fiver and Smiley are just two seals that are frequently spotted in the same areas in Dorset.
