Exhibition fit for royalty on show in Poundbury this weekend

The special exhibition will open for one day only in the Jubilee Hall, next to Waitrose in Queen Mother Square, this Saturday.

The exhibition celebrates the 25 years since the planning and building of Poundbury started.

It features the people who live and work in Poundbury as well as the founding craftsman and developers who helped create the development.

The exhibition was commissioned by the Duchy of Cornwall for the special historic visit last month by The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, their son The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall.

During the visit the royal family unveiled a monument of The Queen Mother in front of hundreds of spectators who flocked to the square to catch a glimpse of the royal family.

In a forward written for the exhibition by The Prince of Wales, he said: "When I set out on this venture, I was determined that Poundbury would break the mould of conventional housing development in this country, and create an attractive place for people to live, work, and play.

"Many people said that it could never succeed, but I am happy to say that the sceptics were wrong and it is now a thriving urban settlement alongside Dorchester."

He spoke of pride of the 3,000 people living in Poundbury, in a genuine mixed community with integrated social and private housing.

In addition, there are now 2,000 people working in more 185 separate businesses.

The exhibition was designed by Celebrating Poundbury Magazine and photographed by Katharine Davies.

The free exhibition will open from 9am until 2pm on Saturday.

It is jointly hosted by Celebrating Poundbury and The Brace of Butchers and there will be a choir singing festive songs, mulled cider, luxury hot chocolate from Lagom Deli, roasted chestnuts and roasted marshmallows for the children.

There will be food traders from the Dorset Farmers’ Market from 9am.
