A COLLECTION of early 20th century motorcycling achievements and awards will go under the hammer in Sherborne in January.

The collection, won and awarded to Mr H Breach and his business partner Mr D O'Donovan for racing Norton motorcycles and sidecar, is being sold by the auctioneers Charterhouse.

Charterhouse's Matthew Whitney, who hopes to make between £2,000 and £3,000 for the collection, said: "It is a fascinating archive relating to the pair who were awarded 80 world class records for riding a three-and-a-half horsepower Norton motorcycle and sidecar.

"Records set include the motorcycle and sidecar 12-hour, 600-mile, endurance race which must have been a very demanding and very gruelling event."

One of the items up for sale is an inscribed silver bowl, awarded to Mr Breach for coming first at Brooklands in 1921, with a speed of 58.9mph.

A range of medals for Brooklands speed trials records, two bronze British Motor Cycle Racing Club plaques, members' club badges from the era, medallions, letters and documents will be included in the sale.

This collection is being offered for sale on behalf of Mr Beach's grandson, who lives in the New Forest.

The sale is scheduled for January 20, 2017.
