A WOMAN was rescued after falling and badly injuring her ankle.

At around 2pm on Thursday, volunteers from Swanage and St Albans coastguard teams were called to the South West Coast Path to the aid of a young woman who had slipped awkwardly.

She had fallen between the Western Mile Markers and Dancing Ledge, near Langton Matravers, and had injured her ankle badly so was unable to walk.

The teams accessed the tracks near Verney Farm and stabilised the woman, monitoring her condition and keeping her warm.

With no ambulance available, Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service brought in pain relief and the coastguard helicopter was called to evacuate the woman.

However, when it arrived the mist had so low that the helicopter was unable to land and had to return to base.

However, the woman was soon conveyed by 4x4 back to the farm where an ambulance was waiting to take over her care.
