The body of a woman has been found at a student house - with residents evacuated over a suspected chemical incident.

Emergency services were called to Gillett Road in Poole just after 8pm last night following reports of a sudden death.

Police said the woman was aged in her 30s.

The property on Gillett Road is part of the student village on the edge of Bournemouth University's Talbot Campus.

Police have said the property contained unknown chemical substances.

A spokesperson for Dorset Police said: "Dorset Police officers together with the Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service attended the address.

"As a precaution residents of the surrounding properties were evacuated while the substances were removed.

"There are no suspicious circumstances. Next of kin have been informed and the coroner notified."

A spokesperson for Bournemouth University said: "We were made aware of an incident on Thursday evening on our Talbot Campus and can confirm the death of one student, whose next of kin are being informed, with our thoughts and support extended to them.

"Emergency services responded and we are actively working with the police on this matter and making support available for any students who have been affected.

"This was an isolated incident that poses no risk to staff and students on campus this morning."

Eyewitnesses reported seeing firefighters in protective clothing remove a bin containing the hazardous materials.

A police cordon was also set up.

A spokesperson for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said that they were contacted by Dorset Police just after 9.20pm to assist with a ‘chemical incident.’ They added that crews from Redhill Park and Springbourne were despatched and arrived at the scene by 9.30pm.

Crews evacuated everybody from the property before the building was ventilated. A special chemical team from Poole Fire Station arrived at the scene at 10.20pm and all fire crews had left the scene by 11.10pm.

The spokesperson said that the incident is being investigated by Dorset Police.
