A MAJOR scheme to renew water mains in Weymouth has been completed ahead of schedule.

Wessex water had been carrying out work on Dorchester Road since September 12.

It was estimated to take 24 weeks but has now finished after 23 weeks.

Wessex Water has invested around £400,000 to modernise ageing water mains to reduce the likelihood of any further bursts and possible interruptions to the supply in the area.

The work involved replacing water mains along the road with new plastic pipes and an ‘innovative dig technique’ was used to help complete work earlier than anticipated.

During the scheme, the company worked closely with local businesses and residents to reduce disruption.

Wessex Water’s design engineer Alan Marler said: “We realise that the work has caused some inconvenience and we’d like to thank residents and businesses for their patience and cooperation.

“By carrying out the improvement work in sections and using a no dig technique that minimises excavation requirements, we have been able to complete work sooner than expected.

“Local people will now benefit from this essential work by having a more reliable supply and improved water quality.”

The gasworks at the Manor Roundabout remain in place.
